In any case,
Javascript and Cookies should be allowed. If they are not allowed, you can do some basic browsing, but you cannot do any personal settings.
To make personal settings, at least "session cookies" must be allowed. They are deleted by the browser, when you leave this site. But then you must enter your settings every time, when you want to practise. Better than nothing.
Unfortunately there can also be some problems concerning the
Audition function. If I would have known all this, I would have longer thought about, if the the former Java applet was really so bad, that I had to replace it.
For it also
Javascript is needed. The simple download, which is then played in the media player should then always work.
But it can get a bit complicated, when you want to use the
Jazz-Plugin. There are some situation, when it does not work at all.
The hardest (like usually) it is for users of the
Internet Explorer. What matters here is the used version:
IE7 and IE8 do not work at all.
But also, if you are using IE9 or
IE10, danger lurks: there is the so-called
"Compatibility View". If it is active for free-notes.net, then the modern browser behaves like an ancient one. So also in this case I only allow the Download. The Compatibility View can be seen in IE10 in the main menu under "Tools/Compatibility View" resp. "Tools/Compatibility View Settings" (a horrible word).
I personally only use IE, if I must. Until now I had the least problems with
Firefox.
And here bad news for
Chrome users: in Chrome the Jazz-Plugin is now deactivated.
It is a plugin using the NPAPI concept, and Google (the creator of Chrome) thinks, it is unsafe. Currently you can activate it manually, but nobody knows, for how long (please google for "Chrome NPAPI activation").
If after the
installation of the Jazz-Pugin the button is still called "Download", (which means, that the plugin was not recognized) sometimes the following trick can help (e.g. in Firefox): search the Jazz-Plugin in the main menu under "Tools/Addons". If you find it, you can set the setting to "always activate".
Lately I found an additional
problem installing the Jazz-Plugin.
I installed it as an Administrator. Then I could use it as Administrator, but not as another
user (in spite of well-behaved clicking "install for all users"). You notice this, because only the Download" button is shown instead of the "|>". One thing helped finally: double clicking as the other, non-provileged user on the installation file (Jazz-Plugin-1-3.msi) and selecting "repair" in the upcoming pop-up-window.
And besides of that the version you can see in the control panel shows version 1.1 in contradiction to the version 1.3 of the installation file. This does not really provide confidence. But I did not see other problems with it.
A (preliminary) last word to the subject
"Download and listening to the Download". Also this one I had imagined more easy. On my 3 computers with mit Windows XP/7 and IE8/IE10/Firefox/Chrome/Opera und Windows Media Player it works like this:
- I click the "Download" button
- a window pops up: "Open or Save?"
- I choose "Open"
- the Media Player pops up and plays the Midi.
Okay, sometimes there are small deviations. E.g. Chrome creates a small box at the bottom of the Browser that you must start manually. But there you can also choose "Open always ..." (sorry, I have no English machine, I hope the wording is similar). This works sometimes, sometimes not (e.g. Firefox). And in Opera you have to coose the Media Player manually. But eventually after 2 clicks I hear something.
A user has told me, that this does not work. But he had no installed Media Player. He has found and installed a programm called
Virtual Piano. It has the advantage, that it needs no installation. The crucial point seems to be, that the file types ".mid" and ".midi" are linked to a program. Doing this works different resp. more complicated with every Windows version. If you have a problem there, please contact me.
And here a very last
request: if one of the things, that I have described here does not work, please send me a mail.
In the last time it happens often, that the
sheet image is only shown partially. Often also the
audition applet is replaced by an error text. I do not know the exact reason for that. I guess it
might be the web server. The only thing that can be done in this situation is to refresh the page.
